Biography

Julie Houston is a singer and flutist in both the jazz and classical genres. She has a music degree from the Univ. of Wisconsin-Madison and works regularly as a studio singer in Indianapolis and Chicago.

For the last several years Julie has been singing with various jazz and Brazilian groups. She has performed at many regional venues and events including the Indy Jazz Fest, the Broad Ripple Art Fair, the Chatterbox, the Jazz Kitchen, as well as many corporate and private functions. She has had the privilege to perform with many of Indianapolis' finest jazz musicians. Julie's voice has been described as smooth, smoky, and unaffected. Whether performing in a duo or with a big band Julie's sound is sophisticated and swinging. Her repertoire focuses on jazz standards and Brazilian bossa nova but, if requested, she is happy to include acoustic pop covers. As a flutist, Julie adds versatility in her groups. Her lush flute sound and melodic improvisation add another aural dimension.

Ms. Houston is also a classical flautist. She plays most often with a flute/violin/cello trio. Over the years she has played for hundreds of weddings, church services, and private or corporate functions.

Julie also has a professional Christmas caroling group. This four part, a cappella vocal quartet performs in period costume in both concert settings and as strolling entertainment. They have performed for events including Pacers games, school programs, country club and business holiday parties, and small gatherings at private homes.
